Then in came Max Smith and neither player really hit his stride the rest of the way. Jalen Whitlow started the game on fire Saturday and seemed in a rhythm out of the gate, something he hasn't done all season. UK Has to Pick a Quarterback and Stick With ItĪfter four games, the oldest comment in the football rhetorical book has been proven true once again.you just can't play with two quarterbacks. It came from the tv telecast and includes fans with different degrees of happiness.Ģ. Not sure why I love this picture, but I do. For a program building, that is a good start. Instead UK fought, and while out-manned, continued to improve. We have all see MANY UK-Florida games that would have ended in a rout.especially after the 93 yard drive to start the game. UK struggled to move the ball at times, but there were bursts of effectiveness against a defense that may be one of the best 2-3 in the country. Kentucky was worn down slowly, but at least it was slowly, as they generally contained the playmakers. Kentucky back seven continue to play better than I would have ever imagined and the Gators really only had one big play, the Matt Jones "tackled by my own player" run. While both would have made the game interesting, Florida was still the better team and showcased their SEC superiority most obviously on the offensive and defensive line. Then on the throwback play (drawn up perfectly), Jalen Whitlow was wide open, but Darryl Collins just didn't throw the ball and took a crippling sack. UK had two shots to cut the game to one score and make Florida tight.after the Josh Forrest INT, Bud Dupree missed a block on the Florida QB that could have led to a walk into the end zone. But the Cats weren't able to get it done, primarily because Florida controlled the line of scrimmage and UK missed the couple of big play chances it had to make it interesting.

I believed Florida was down (I think that is still the case), Kentucky is improving (also the case) and the atmosphere would be electric (generally the case). I had thoroughly convinced myself that Kentucky had a chance of stealing the game on Saturday night. I See Positive Steps Forward from Saturday: He may not be Conway, but he can still bring it.Īnd with that, the five things most important from the weekend that passed, along with some pictures from the UK festivities:ġ. Give me Marty Stuart and his odd back story (he grew up with a crush on country singer Connie Smith, and then 15 years ago married her.when he was 39 and she was 57) over just about anyone we have today. Simply put, he is the type of musician that simply wouldn't exist today, because we need to pick another 6'3" former college football tight end to tell us about how much beer they can drink while they are partying at the lake in their truck with a couple of bros (none of which they every do). He sang about love ("Burn Me Down"), drinking ("The Whiskey Ain't Working Anymore" and general country nonsense ("Hillbilly Rock."). I love his bizarre coiffed mullet and his Dwight Yoakam-like mediocre dance moves, the entire basis of which seems to be to shake his butt at the women in the crowd. His songs were goofy ("Tempted" is one of my top 50 ever), but his music ability was not and the way Stuart plays guitar is as good as any country musician ever. Look at the man above.now he is greying and a little slower with his moves, but there was a time in the 80s that he made your grandmother swoon in the same way that the college girls are now trying to mount Luke Bryan. There was a time that country also included garish outfits, exemplified by Stuart and his wild rhinestone suits. I harken back to the days of Cash/Waylon/Willie, etc but also have a soft spot for the cheesy country of today's birthday salute, the great Marty Stuart.

However, what I see now is mostly guys wearing the standard country uniform (tight jeans, fake cowboy boots and either a plaid shirt with the sleeves rolled up or, if they are in better shape, a form-fitting v-neck t-shirt) and singing songs concerning things they would never do (like chew tobacco, chew tobacco, spit). A great authentic voice with songs that actually express real emotion.that to me is country music. If you listen to the radio show, you know that I am not a huge fan of modern country music and listening to Whitley only confirmed why. While most of you are focusing on the "Breaking Bad" finale, I am writing this entry and listening to Keith Whitley.
